42b872cb one person reportedly dead after multiple people hit by vehicle near university of delaware 1

In a tragic incident near the University of Delaware campus on Tuesday afternoon, one person was killed and several others injured after a U-Haul rental van, which had not been returned, struck multiple pedestrians and a police vehicle. The Newark, Delaware Police Department reported that officers identified the van parked on the street around 4:30 p.m., noting it had been reported as an unauthorized use vehicle since Monday. The vehicle, originally rented but not returned by its due date of March 18, became the center of a chaotic scene.

As officers attempted to apprehend the two suspects inside the van, the individuals fled the scene, driving over a curb and crashing into a marked police vehicle. Ignoring officer commands, the suspects exited the parking lot at high speed. Newark officers chose not to engage in a pursuit and remained in the area.

During the escape, the van struck two pedestrians standing near a parked vehicle before colliding with multiple other parked cars, ultimately becoming disabled. First responders provided immediate aid to the injured. Tragically, one pedestrian was pronounced dead, while another sustained serious injuries. Three additional individuals were transported to the emergency room with non-life-threatening injuries, and three others were treated for minor injuries but declined further medical attention.

The driver and passenger of the U-Haul were detained. The driver, who sustained serious injuries, was hospitalized. Authorities have urged drivers to avoid the area as the Newark Police Department’s Traffic Unit continues its investigation. The road will remain closed until further notice.
