A harrowing incident unfolded on Tuesday as a Frontier Airlines flight experienced a mechanical failure during landing at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Puerto Rico. Passenger MELANI GONZALEZ WHARTON recounted the terrifying ordeal on Facebook, describing how one of the plane’s front wheels broke off and caught fire during the high-speed landing.

“For a few minutes, I thought it was the end of our story here on earth,” WHARTON wrote, detailing the moment she witnessed the crisis unfold from her window. She described the landing as “very bad, aggressive, and at a high speed,” which led to the wheel detachment and subsequent fire.

Frontier Flight 5306, an Airbus A321 carrying 228 passengers, was en route from Florida to Puerto Rico when the incident occurred. According to Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Día, a mechanical issue with the landing gear caused the wheel to break off during the approach.

Flight investigator LUIS IRIZARRY told WAPA-TV that the co-pilot, described as young, was in command at the time of the incident. However, the captain intervened and successfully landed the plane, averting a potential catastrophe. WHARTON expressed concern about the experience, stating, “The reality is that we were flying in the hands of inexperts,” referring to the inexperienced co-pilot.

No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew. Frontier Airlines has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. Fox News Digital contacted the airline for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

This incident adds to growing concerns about aviation safety and pilot training, particularly following recent high-profile accidents. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the mechanical failure.
