U.S. Transportation Secretary SEAN DUFFY encountered a shocking act of violence against a police officer during a routine visit to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday afternoon. In a post on X, the former Trump administration official detailed how he was en route to the Navy Yard Metro Station when his staff informed him of the incident involving a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) officer.

According to Duffy, he was preparing to discuss transit safety when he learned that an officer had been stabbed in the face. The WMATA later confirmed the assault to Fox News Digital, stating that the suspect attacked the officer with a sharp metal object after refusing to pay the fare. The suspect has been arrested and will face assault charges.

The officer sustained lacerations and puncture wounds to the face but was reportedly in good spirits following the attack, Duffy noted. Additional officers nearby detained the suspect and recovered the weapon used in the assault.

SEAN DUFFY expressed his dismay on social media, calling the incident “horrible” and extending his thoughts to the officer’s family. “These acts of senseless violence are exactly why @USDOT is fighting to re-secure our transit systems and crack down on violent crime,” he wrote. Duffy also shared images of himself meeting with police officers and emphasized his gratitude for their service.

“My thanks go out to him and all the brave officers of @MetroTransitPD,” Duffy wrote. “They put their lives on the line each and every day to keep us safe. Violence against them cannot be tolerated, and we must do better.”

In a video posted shortly after the incident, Duffy appeared visibly shaken. “I was gonna go down and talk to people right in the subway, talk about the safety and cleanliness,” he explained. “But before I was going to go down, one of our Metro cops was stabbed in the face by someone down in the system. Again, unacceptable. Our officers, our people deserve to be treated better.”

Duffy also announced plans to meet with the WMATA CEO to address the incident and reiterated the Department of Transportation’s commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring transit safety.
